My talk concerns the Chinese city of Chang’an, capital of the Western Han dynasty during the first two centuries BCE and one of the two greatest cities of the classical world.  Nearly three times the size of Rome, the city, like Rome, played a crucial role in the creation of the early Chinese empire.  In sharp contrast to Rome, there are few visible remains of the ancient city, which is hidden under the rapidly developing metropolis of modern Xi’an in northwestern China. My lecture will discuss the historiographical challenges posed by the task of rendering the ancient city visible again.  Besides involving an awareness of the particular biases of ancient textual sources, it also requires an understanding of the concerns of modern archaeology, of the reasons for the emergence of comparative ancient history as a new but distinct field of scholarly enquiry, and of the realities of modern urban development. However, once these challenges are properly addressed, a portrait of this important ancient city, meaningful to our modern, rapidly globalizing world, can emerge.
