The First Trip of STU Students to Sunshine International Camp
The first 10 STUs who participated in “Sunshine International Camp” (SIC) in recent days have come back to school with personally edited commemorative videos and colorful photos, and shared their experiences and gains in Beijing with teachers and students.
Sunshine International Camp, established by China Soong Ching Ling Foundation and Hong Kong CEO Global Education Foundation, is to provide international exchange platform for college students and cultivate college students’ ability of self-management, interpersonal communication and team work. Since the opening in 2005, SIC has received more than 5400 Chinese and foreign college students to participate. All the students are from famous universities both at home and abroad, such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Taiwan University, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), University of Texas at Dallas (USA), and so on.
The organizers of SIC have strict requirements for the comprehensive quality of the trainees. To select eligible students, the College of Liberal Arts, the English Language Center and the Center for Religious Culture Studies actively promoted the intramural recruitment and joint selection. And 10 students excellent in character and learning were selected to participate in SIC that was held in Beijing from July 16th to July 25th. Their English level is very prominent, and the average of their IELTS band score reach up to 7 points.
The activities of camp carried out mostly in groups. 10 STUs and more than 200 participants were assigned to separate groups. Besides excellent college students and teachers from all over the world, groups also consisted of dedicated international volunteers. In addition, lecturers were mostly elites from business and education, including Dr. Chon TSAI (Ph.D., Nuclear Engineering from MIT ), CHEW Loy Cheow (adjunct associate professor in the Finance Department, NUS Business School), etc. The camp run in English and set different learning topics every day, including “Failing Forward”, “City Hunt”, “The way to success”, “Servant leader” and so on.
Besides lectures and group discussions, SIC added a variety of team activities such as role play, mutual listening, and team games. Moreover, experiential learning is also a major feature of SIC, and the content of this experiential learning is “City Hunt”. In day 5, each group got some cash provided by the sponsor. And they need to plan the trip with the money and complete tasks within the given time. In the process of carrying out the tasks, STUs not only closely felt the profound cultural heritage of Beijing, but also learned practical skills such as how to work in team, be a leader and serve others, and efficiently execute plans.
During the camp, STUs had an outstanding performance. They actively participated in the lectures and left a deep impression to the organizers. Senior Yingran Wu from Broadcasting and Television major shared their team work at the camp on behalf of the group for multiple times. Junior Zixuan Li from Business Management major led his team to showcase. And Senior Xilin Jin from Mechanical and Electrical major was invited to host the closing ceremony. At the end of the camp, STUs gave elaborate gifts with STU elements to campers and mentors as a souvenir.
In 9 days, 10 STUs learnt with students from other colleges and overseas volunteers, made progress together and established profound friendship with them. Their first trip to Sunshine International Camp made great gains, and led more college students and teachers at home and abroad have a clear knowledge about the comprehensive capacity of students in STU and STU, which has international characteristics as the motto goes “far away from Guangzhou, but very close to the world”.
