Global Studies Honors Program: A Joint Interdisciplinary Degree Program Developed by CGS with CLL and FLL

Program Description

Global Studies Honors Program is a joint degree program developed by the Center for Global Studies (CGS) with Department of Chinese Language and Literature (CLL) and Department of Foreign Language and Literature (FLL) in College of Liberal Arts (CLA) started from September, 2014. This cross-departmental and cross-major program represents an interdisciplinary endeavor to enable exploration of questions and answers beyond the scope of any single discipline. Interdisciplinary approaches lead our students across the restraints of disciplinary borders, encouraging an awareness of multiple cultural and global perspectives to actively understand and also embrace the complexities and differences of a diverse world.

Events from the first decades of the 21st century have shown monumental challenges and opportunities within an unprecedented world-wide interconnectivity, and in order to reap the rewards and shoulder the responsibility, students need preparation for the demands of global citizenship. The Global Studies Honors Program is committed to cultivating among our students global perspectives and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding and analyzing the origins, phenomena and consequences of global flows of peoples, information and media, finance, politics, and technologies.

This cutting-edge program will expand students’ expertise in their major, enhance their analytical skills, better prepare them for working in an internationalized arena, and provide skills for further graduate study, particular in international English-language environments.

The participants in the Global Studies Honors Program will have decisive advantages when competing for overseas study and internship opportunities provided by the college and the university, such as Shantou University’s current exchange programs with Dublin City University, the National University of Ireland—Galway, University of Calgary (Canada), Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, City University of Hong Kong, University of Kentucky etc.

Program Goals

Global Studies Honors Program aims to cultivate responsible global and local citizens who are also equipped with versatile skills and adaptable abilities by providing rigorous and flexible education to develop students’ integrative thinking capabilities, interdisciplinary research abilities, global perspectives, new literacies and effective communication skills in English or other international languages. The training will help students acquire overall understanding of the complex global-local relationships that now exist in the 21st century as well as expertise in various areas and fields, thereby enabling them to meet with challenges and operate successfully in future globalized learning and working environments.

The biggest changes are improved access control (ACL) and nested categories. This release of Joomla has strong continuity with Joomla! 1.7 while adding enhancements.

The Center for Global Studies (CGS)

CGS is an international, interdisciplinary, and multilingual faculty who has been academically trained in North American, Europe and Asian Pacific. Our teaching and research program provides liberal arts electives to the students of the entire university designed to advance academic training, improve thinking skills and habits, broaden intellectual horizons, and enhance perceptual sensitivity. We believe that the liberal arts are an essential part of a college education; therefore we provide a thematically and methodologically integrated academic program of humanities and social sciences that includes reflections upon the natural sciences. We teach with the conviction that an interdisciplinary education in STU should: encourage students to become rigorous independent thinkers; cultivate students to be socially responsible local and global citizens; explore multiple ways of knowing and learning; and enhance students’ study in their major subjects.

As a Humanities and Social Sciences oriented faculty, CGS offers courses in Anthropology, History, Media and Cultural Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Digital Humanities. We emphasize student-centered, active learning in our teaching, and provide our classes in forms of seminar, interactive lecture, and independent study. Our courses all use multi-media and e-learning or hybrid learning to enhance content learning and new literacy training, which has become more and more important to our students’ future. CGS courses are conducted in English, Chinese or bilingual formats.

Global Studies Symposium: "Value and Life Meaning" October 2016

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.
