Professor Krueger (瞿开森) studied Social Anthropology/Visual

Anthropology, Chinese Studies, Film and Media Studies and received his M.A.degree from the University of Goettingen, Germany (1981). He worked for the Ministry of Science and Technology (1985-1989) as project supervisor and as a senior researcher/scientific publisher (1989-1998) at the Institute of Scientific Film-
knowledge and media- (IWF) Goettingen, Germany editing the Chinese Historical
Ethnographic Film Series (1957-1966) for the IWF. He received his PhD. from the Film and Media Studies Department of University of Hildesheim, Germany for his ground-breaking work on the early history of ethnographic film in the P.R. of China. Prof. Krueger specialises in Visual Anthropology, Film+Media Studies, Visual Culture Studies, History of Documentary Film, Chinese Documentary and Ethnographic Film.

From 1999-2003 he worked as Project Manager and Scientific Director for the East Asia Institute of Visual Anthropology (EAIVA) at Yunnan University, Kunming, China. From February 2004 until February 2007 he was Associate Professor and Head of the New Media and Video Production Department of the School of Communications and Design at ZhongshanUniversity, Guangzhou, China and Visiting Professor at the Department of Sociology, Hong KongUniversity (2005-2006). Between February 2007 and January 2009 Prof Krueger joined BNU-HKBU United International College (UIC) and was Head of Programme (Cinema and Television Programme) and Professor within the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences. Between February 2009 and January 2010 Prof. Krueger was Visiting Professor/ Senior Academic Advisor to the School of Journalism, Media and Communication at MianyangNormalUniversity and taught at the International School of Design Communication, BNU, Zhuhai Campus. Since February 2010 he has been teaching at ShantouUniversity as a faculty member of the Centre for International Studies, School of Liberal Arts. He also is a member of the Science and Research Council Committee of Shantou University. Prof. Krueger received Scholarships from the German Academic Exchange Council (DAAD) for Post-Graduate Studies at FudanUniversity, Shanghai,China (1982-1985) and a German Science Foundation (DFG) PhD. Scholarship (1995 – 1998).

 

In 2002 Prof. Krueger was awarded the Friendship with Yunnan Award for outstanding contributions to the development of Yunnan Province Academia. In 2005 he received the Friendship with Guangdong Award for outstanding contributions to the development of Guangdong Province Academia. Prof. Krueger is correspondent and programme consultant for the International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film (DOK Leipzig) and DOC Film program Curator for the Shanghai based German Goethe Institute. He works as senior research adviser for the Chinese Association of Visual Anthropology (CAVA) and as consultant for Yunnan Television, Department of Documentary Film Production, Kunming, China. He is member of the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA), the American Anthropological Association (AAA), The Nordic Anthropological Film Association (NAFA), The Royal Institute of Anthropology of Great Britain (RAI) and the Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC) amongst others. He also is the Coordinator for the P.R. of China for the Asian Cinema Studies Society’s Asian Cinema Journal.
