The 3rd STU Global Studies Symposium: Global Perspectives

October 17-18, 2014 /20141017-18

Global Studies, as its name indicates, is a field of study shaped by inquiries into phenomena and issues that have global effects. One of the ways that Global Studies programs attempt to define themselves is by claiming the ability to provide students with global perspectives. While the objects of Global Studies are routinely studied from local, national, to even exclusionist or chauvinist points of view, these orientations typically fail to meet the standards of what is broadly billed as “Global Studies.” Global perspectives require that students, instructors, and researchers re-think a world that is not reduced to national or even local interests and to highlight the interrelation and interdependence of our existence and our world.

It is not surprising then that many Global Studies programs in the world now aim to cultivate students’ global perspectives with a clear mission of preparing their students to become global citizens. But what are “global perspectives”? How do they differ from our other (e.g., personal, regional, national or international) perspectives? What would such perspectives enable us to see, to learn, and to create in today’s world? And how can we develop global perspectives among our faculty and students?

Continuing our effort to create a Global Studies program at STU and to bring Global Studies awareness to the STU community, the 3rd STU Global Studies Symposium invites scholars and educators to share their expertise and experience to further excavate this territory so central to the heart of an emerging discipline.
