Chinese Exclusion to the 2016 Elections: Common Themes for Asians in America

ABSTRACT: From the days earliest days of US-China trade, the relationship between the two countries has been complex and fraught with misunderstanding. In the US, the image of China has often been exploited to promote fear and distrust, creating images of Chinese that were less than human. Over the years, those images have changed according to the world political climate but modern times seem remarkably similar to the old images of the 19th Century. With every twist and turn, a hybrid culture of Chinese and Asians in America has emerged that is often confusing and complicated to new arrivals to the US from China and Asia.
Author and journalist Helen Zia, an outspoken Chinese American, offers her personal experiences and observations of how Asians fit into the American landscape, particularly in light of the recent political storms such as the Black Lives Matter, the immigration debates and the November presidential elections.

About the Speaker
Helen Zia is an award-winning author, journalist, Fulbright Scholar to China, and former Executive Editor of Ms. Magazine. The daughter of Chinese immigrants, she has been outspoken in the US on issues. Helen is the author of the book: Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People, which President Bill Clinton quoted from twice in the Rose Garden. Her work on anti-Asian hate violence is documented in the film, "Who Killed Vincent Chin?" and she was profiled in Bill Moyers' documentary, "Becoming American: The Chinese Experience.”
Helen Zia received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the Law School of the City University of New York for bringing important matters of social justice into public view. A member of Princeton University's first graduating class of women, Helen quit medical school to work as a construction laborer, an autoworker, and a community organizer, until she discovered her life’s work as a writer.
谢汉兰（Helen Zia）是获奖作家、记者、富布赖特学访华学者及前《妇女杂志》执行主编. 身为第二代华裔，她在美国一直都是直言不讳。她是《亚裔美国梦：一个美国名族的崛起》一书的作者。美国前总统比尔·克林顿曾在白宫玫瑰园两次引用此书。她关于反亚裔仇恨暴力的报告也被收录于纪录片《谁杀死了陈果仁？》，而且她还在比尔·莫耶斯导演拍摄的纪录片《成为美国人：华人的经历》中出镜。
1997年，她发起了一场运动呼吁美国新闻媒体结束针对美籍华裔的歧视；2008年，她曾担任北京奥运会旧金山市火炬手。2010年，谢汉兰作为证人在联邦法庭出庭作证，支持婚姻平等，反对美国最高院决定的一项反同性婚姻权的提案“8号提案”。她将社会公平的重大事件引入公众视野，因而获得了纽约城市大学法学院授予的荣誉法学博士。她还曾是普林斯顿大学招收的第一届女毕业生之一，然而她从医学院退学后当过建筑工人、汽车工人、社区干事，最终找到了她的终身职业，成了一名作家。
