On June 11, 2026, a delegation led by Ma Yan, Deputy Director of the Women’s Research Institute of the All-China Women’s Federation and Deputy Secretary-General of the China Women’s Studies Association, visited Shantou University (STU) to review the development of its Women/Gender Research and Training Base and attend a symposium on its future development.

The delegation also included Prof. Xue Ninglan, Executive Council Member of the China Women’s Studies Association and Research Fellow at the Institute of Law, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Prof. Wang Hui, Council Member of the China Women’s Studies Association and Deputy Director of the Center for Women’s Studies and Development at Shandong Women’s University.

During the visit, the delegation toured Origo College and Esther Hall, where they learned about STU’s collaborative model of academic and residential college education. The visit highlighted the University’s initiatives in gender equality education, research on women in history and culture, women’s leadership development, health and well-being education, and community engagement.

A symposium was subsequently held at Shude College. Zhou Zhensong, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Shantou University Committee, attended the meeting and delivered welcoming remarks. Faculty members and researchers from the College of Liberal Arts and other academic units also participated.

Associate Professor Zhou Jie, Director of the Women’s Research Center at the College of Liberal Arts, presented an overview of the Base’s recent development. She highlighted its work in academic research, curriculum development, student education, think-tank initiatives, and community engagement. The Base has continued to promote interdisciplinary research on women and gender, support faculty and student research projects, facilitate the application of research findings, and explore collaborative approaches involving universities, public institutions, healthcare providers, and community organizations.

The symposium also explored emerging directions for women’s and gender studies. Participants discussed issues including interdisciplinary collaboration, the translation of research into practice, women’s health across the life course, the rights and interests of women in new forms of employment, women’s rights in digital spaces, and the cultural experiences of young women. Experts also emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration between universities and social institutions and expanding networks for women’s studies and policy research.

In her concluding remarks, Ma Yan acknowledged the Base’s achievements, particularly its work on local culture and women’s cultural education. She encouraged the Base to further integrate research resources within and beyond the University, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, and contribute more actively to academic and think-tank networks in women’s studies.
