Department of Foreign Languages and Literature
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature is one of the earliest-established and most academically distinguished departments at Shantou University. It currently offers bachelor’s degree programs in English, Spanish, and Thai, as well as a first-level discipline master’s program in Foreign Languages and Literature and professional master’s degree programs, including Translation and Subject‑based Teaching (English). The undergraduate programs date back to the founding of the university: the English program began enrolling undergraduates in 1983, the Spanish program in 2019, and the Thai program in 2022. The graduate programs originated in 1993, when the department began jointly training master’s students in English with renowned institutions such as Peking University and Sun Yat-sen University. In 2006, it was authorized to confer the master’s degree in English Language and Literature. In 2018, it obtained the authorization for the Master of Education (English). In 2021, it was granted the authorization for the Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI). In 2024, it was approved to establish the first-level discipline master’s program in Foreign Languages and Literature. In 2025, the discipline of Foreign Languages and Literature was approved to independently establish a secondary-discipline master’s degree authorization point in Contry and Area Studies. The master’s program in Foreign Languages and Literature comprises four secondary disciplines: Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Comparative Literature and Cross-Cultural Studies, Translation Studies, and Country and Area Studies. Currently, over 400 full-time undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled.
The department currently has 30 full-time faculty, including 7 professors and associate professors; 90% of all the faculty hold doctoral degrees and have overseas study and research experience. In recent years, the faculty has received nearly 10 provincial, ministerial, and national teaching achievement awards; secured over 20 projects funded by the National Social Science Fund as well as provincial, ministerial, and horizontal projects; published more than 80 papers in top-tier and core journals at home and abroad, including SSCI, A&HCI, and CSSCIindexed journals; and authored or translated over 20 academic monographs and translations. The English program was selected as a National First-Class Undergraduate Program in 2022. The English program received an A rating in Chinese Universities’ Major Rankings of Soft Science in 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026.
The department is anchored by its faculty in English, Spanish, and Thai, and collaborates with teaching and research units such as the English Language Center (ELC), the Center for Global Studies (CGS), the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, and the School of Journalism to jointly offer foreign language programs and organize the relevant educational and teaching activities for students. The curriculum is systematic yet flexible, and the teaching model is innovative and distinctive. It upholds a student-centered educational philosophy that serves the students’ needs, providing them with individualized conditions for self-directed learning and self-designed development. The department is committed to whole-person education, helping students discover and realize their potential, enhance their personal qualities, and improve their abilities in learning, work, and life, thereby laying a solid foundation for their future employment or further studies upon graduation. In addition to the learning opportunities within their home university and major, students of the department may also apply for student exchange programs to pursue study opportunities abroad. The overseas partner universities currently collaborating with the college mainly include: Dublin City University (Ireland), the National University of Ireland, Galway(Ireland), the University of Kentucky (USA), Pace University (USA), Southern Cross University (Australia), the University of Seville (Spain), and Pinacatikinwilo University (Thailand), etc.
The foreign language programs at Shantou University are built upon three foundational areas—linguistics, literature, cultureand translation studies—and centered on cultivating knowledge and competencies in integrated thinking, foreign literature, linguistics and applied linguistics, translation theory and practice, cross-cultural communication, and country and area studies. The programs endeavor to deliver undergraduate and master’s education in foreign languages characterized by internationalization and individualized attention. Guided by the advanced Outcome-Based Education (OBE) philosophy, the programs aim to cultivate a large number of practice-oriented and a small number of research-oriented foreign language professionals who possess a global cultural vision, integrated thinking ability, profound humanistic grounding, and strong bilingual (English-Chinese, Spanish-Chinese, Thai-Chinese) competencies in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translating. The programs place particular emphasis on developing students’ solid bilingual and multilingual capabilities, profound insights into Chinese and world cultures, modern civic awareness, and strong abilities in integrated thinking, cross-cultural communication, and lifelong learning.
