Research Center for Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao and Overseas Chinese Literature

The Research Center for Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao and Overseas Chinese Literature of the College of Liberal Arts, Shantou University, was founded in February 1984. The Center is devoted to the study of Taiwan literature, Hong Kong literature, Macao literature and overseas Chinese literature, with overseas Chinese literature as its primary research focus. Since its establishment, the Center has undertaken 8 research projects, including 2 at the national level, 4 at the provincial level and 2 at the university level. It has published over 100 academic papers in journals and newspapers at home and abroad, produced 3 academic monographs, 3 edited collections of literary works and 1 collection of scholarly essays, and contributed to the compilation of 3 dictionaries. In August 1999, the Center published A History of Overseas Chinese Literature, a four-volume work of approximately two million Chinese characters that remains the most comprehensive, complete and extensive research monograph on overseas Chinese literature to date. As a pioneering work that fills a long-standing gap in the field, the book has exerted a far-reaching influence in academic circles. Peer scholars have hailed it as “a foundational project for the discipline of overseas Chinese literature,” while others have lauded it as “a milestone marking the establishment of overseas Chinese literature as a new academic discipline.” The publication of A History of Overseas Chinese Literature has placed Shantou University's research on overseas Chinese literature at the forefront of the field in China.

In addition to its research on Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao and overseas Chinese literature, the Center founded the journal Chinese Literature in 1985 — the first publication on the Chinese mainland devoted exclusively to publishing literary works and criticism from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao and overseas Chinese communities. Since its inception, the journal has exerted broad influence in the field of overseas Chinese literature.
